In the early 1970's, a chimpanzee named Washoe was taught to communicate in American Sign Language (ASL) by Beatrix and Allen Gardner at the University of Nevada in Reno.

She was immersed in an environment where she learned to use ASL in daily interactions with her human companions. Washoe learned 132 different words in her time with the Gardners. In time since, four other chimps have also been taught to sign. These five chimps, who consider themselves a family, now use many more signs than they were ever expected to learn (Washoe herself can use up to 240 reliable signs), and sign not only to the humans, but also to each other to communicate.

Washoe even taught her own adopted son, Loulis, to sign without human intervention.

They can invent new signs and combine signs to metaphorically express something different, for example: calling a radish "cry hurt food" or referring to a watermelon as a "drink fruit". They can comprehend and produce novel prepositional phrases, understand vocal English, translate words into ASL and even transmit their signing skills to the next generation without human intervention!

Scientists estimate that there are between 80,000 and 130,000 chimpanzees left in the entire world. These populations have been reduced and fragmented by human interference in their habitats. Conservation efforts that prohibit the hunting and sale of chimpanzees provide some protection; however, these bans are difficult to enforce.

Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin
Steve was a 44-year-old internationally acclaimed television personality and wildlife expert.

"He had a very, very intuitive sense about animals and animal behaviour and that allowed him to do the things that many of us can't do."

Sri Racha Tiger Zoo
Chonburi, Thailand

This is me with a little tiger cub. She was too cute! I was already missing my cat at home but this interaction made it worse.

The cub nipped my thigh and was eyeing my arm like it was a lamb chop!

Me holding a young chimpanzee. This little guy was sooo cute and curious. Little bugger tried to bite me when I took my fan away from him... I guess he liked when I fanned him. His hands are just like ours. I couldn't get enough of the animal interaction in Thailand! I'm trying to remember the name of this garden/zoo.

We stayed in the nearby resort town, Pattaya. For this day trip, we rented a beautiful Harley Davidson motorcycle, boyfriend in front and me snuggled behind him. For other days when we were not driving on the highway or long distances, we each rented much smaller motorcycles. At $4.50cdn to rent per day, we couldn't resist them. I loved riding them! I want one here at home!

I made this. :o)

Jewellery I made. I formed and made the tera cotta coloured flowers and beads from Sculpey material.

I made the earings from glass beads I bought at the bead shop.

" Original Sculpey: This is the original polymer ovenbake clay, available in both White and Terra Cotta formulations. Original Sculpey works and feels like ceramic clay but will not dry out when exposed to air. Shape into desired form and bake at 275F for about 15 minutes per 1/4" of thickness. Once cooled, your project can be sanded, drilled, carved, painted with water-based acrylics or glazed. This formulation is ideal for sculpture. "

This is one of my creations. I made it as an Xmas tree ornament but it ended up in my boyfriend's taxi-cab, dangling off his metre. He told me, he had many inqueries from his customers about its origin. "My girlfriend made it." In disbelief, they questioned him about each individual part, "but how could she make the shoes?, they look factory made. How could she make that head? She must have just put the pieces together."

I made the shoes, head n ears, buttons and pom-pom out of FIMO material. I use my fingers (covered with finger cots, to prevent prints) to shape the FIMO into the generally desired shape, then use old dental tools to create the finely detailed features. Then I place the objects on a piece of tempered glass and put it into the oven for a bit. Ta Da! Don't touch the pieces right out of the oven, but u know that, teehee. Afterward, you can use paint, nailpolish, make-up, sprays, etc. to add/change the colour/shine.

Conan Xmas Ornament I Made, haha

While making this ornament, I noticed how it was starting to look like Conan O'Brien from the Late Night show on NBC lol! I eventually painted a face on it and was going to photograph it with him interacting with a bear, so I could submit it to the 'Conan VS. Bear' website . I have yet to do it. Check out the site though. Sketches, cartoons, etc., of Conan againts/in combat with Bear. http://www.conanvsbear.com
